Maryland’s Newest
Millionaires Claim $27 Million Mega Millions Prize
Mother and Daughter Share Game’s Jackpot
(Baltimore) –
Winning big bucks became a true family affair for one Essex-area
woman and her daughter. The pair purchased a quick pick Mega
Millions ticket for the drawing on Friday, Oct. 5, and became
the state’s newest millionaires.
The women were
shocked to find out they won. They casually walked into the store to
check their tickets in the Lottery ticket checker. The first ticket
was not a winner. But when they scanned the other ticket, they found
out they won the $27 million Mega Millions jackpot. “My heart
stopped,” said the daughter. They usually purchase one
Multi-Match ticket and one Mega Millions ticket each week
and have been playing Mega Millions for about two years.
The most that
the 78-year-old mother ever won was $290 playing Pick 3. “She
and I are always together buying tickets,” said the mother. When
Lottery officials asked her if she carried a lucky charm with her
that day, the mother, pointing up, replied that her “lucky charm was
upstairs.” She was referring to her husband who passed away 10 years
ago.
The winning
ticket was purchased at Mace Liquors, which is located at
507 Mace Ave.
in Essex. The retailer, Hemant Shah, will receive a $25,000
commission for selling the winning ticket. “It’s great for the
store,” said Shah. He plans to use the commission to remodel his
store and share with his employees.
The mother and
daughter will take the cash option of $15.7 million and will use
their winnings to buy a house and new car and to take a trip to
Disney World.
The multi-state
Mega Millions game is played in 12 states -- Maryland,
Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York,
Ohio, Virginia, Washington, Texas and California. Mega Millions
drawings are broadcast on Tuesday and Friday evenings at

numbers for Friday, Oct. 5, were 10, 19, 37, 40, 48 and Mega Ball
01. The last Mega Millions jackpot winner in
